Fishing
We primarily fish the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers (two tributaries of the world-famous Copper River). The Copper River is especially known for its sockeye salmon, which is a bit fattier than other salmon species or even sockeye from other rivers. This makes “Copper River Reds” sort of like the prime cut ribeye of salmon.

Rafting
OK, you aren’t the extreme sports type. That’s ok. On one of our scenic floats, all you have to do is hop in a raft and sit back and relax as you wind down the gentle Gulkana River. Don’t worry, the guide does all the rowing.
Looking for a way to get the little ones involved? We can help you with that too. The Gulkana is a class II river in most sections, and we can toss the kids a paddle and let them row to their heart’s content.

Lodging
Historic Lodge
If you are looking to experience Alaska the way its early western settlers did (without the risks of death by wolf, bear, or exposure of course) our historic roadhouse is one of the last ones still standing. It’s comfortable, authentic, and a great option for groups, families and single travelers alike.
Private Cabins
We get it…you like your privacy! There is no judgement from us just because you don’t want to mingle with locals or…well…anybody. All kidding aside, our cabins are our most popular lodging rental option. They are historic, rustic, and comfortable…but they go fast. You should consider booking them a year or more in advance.
Historic Lodge
The construction of our roadhouse began in the mid-1920s and was finished in 1928. There is nothing “cookie cutter” about the lodge. Rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some rooms allow for two, three or four guests while others are single occupancy only. Most rooms share just a few bathrooms between them, but there is a downstairs room with a private bath available for those needing more privacy. Click the “Book Now!” button below to explore all room details and pricing. Don’t worry…clicking the button doesn’t obligate you to book a room…or to do anything else for that matter.

Private Cabins
Though we are called The Historic Gakona Lodge and Trading Post, we do also have cabins on site…three of them. Cabins vary in size and shape. We have a one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom cabin on site. All cabins have private baths, and some have cooking facilities.
The Gakona River flows swiftly behind cabins (Gakona means Rabbit River in the Athabascan language) and makes for some fun exploring/rock skipping. Click the “Book Now!” button below to explore all cabin details, more pictures, and pricing.
